Gift of "Apostolic"/Missional Leadership

Written by James Nored

Apostolic/Missional Leadership

Apostolic/Missional Leadership - Those gifted in “apostolic” or Missional Leadership are pioneers, seeking to open new frontiers of mission and expand the church’s outreach to new people groups (i.e., unreached ethnic, religious, or generational groups). These missional leaders often serve as foreign missionaries, domestic church planters, or vision setters for the church’s mission in established congregations (Acts 14:1f). In this study, it is the function of going out and leading the church into new mission fields that is intended.

Testimony/Example of How People Have Used This Gift:
Julie, counselor, single, 20s-- “For as long as I can remember I have had a burning and aching in my heart to interact with and share Jesus with people who were different than me. There has been a natural curiosity of different cultures and socioeconomic groups that has moved me out of a place of comfort with my own world and into the lives of people who spend their days much differently than my own.

Even as a child I remember tears welling in my eyes when missionaries visited our church and spoke about their time in other countries. Since then I have been blessed to travel on short-term missions to several countries to work at children’s camps, spend time in orphanages, help with medical mission teams, and teach English using the Bible. Living a missional lifestyle is possible regardless of one’s location. For me this has not only meant a desire to go to other countries, but also to work within the city I live. I have done this through inner-city ministries by giving away clothing and food, walking through neighborhoods to pray with people, and being part of an inner city church.

Another piece of the missional heart is that of prayer. I have noticed in my own life periods of time when the Spirit has placed a desire in my heart to pray for specific missionaries, countries, or groups of people. More recently this has been in the area of the human trafficking. While I am not able to be in the presence of these women and children at this point in my life, I am able to pray for them and those in the place of rescuing and caring for them.”
